We are hosting an Agricultural Policy dinner program next week – Thursday, March 28^th in Chatham @ ODAC.

Based on this past year, the new Farm Bill, Ag trade policies – this program will help answer many of your questions. Dinner is included and this evening is an opportunity learn more and also mingle with local and area farmers.

Join us for our best conference yet! The Piedmont Regional Goat and Sheep Conference will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center located at 1192 US-64 W Business, Pittsboro, NC. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the program will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch provided.

Topics will include internal parasites, deworming, goat carcass evaluation, starting your enterprise, nutrition, finishing meat goats, small-scale budgets, pasture management, and ethnic holiday marketing.

The planning committee has worked hard to bring in some of the best speakers around for this conference! Our keynote speaker will be Susan Schoenian, Sheep and Goat Specialist (University of Maryland). Additional speakers on the program include Derek Washburn from the NC Farm School (NC State University) and Dr. Emily Cope, Livestock Extension Specialists (N.C. A&T State University).

Required Software Component: (Must choose at least one)

Farm Logic, Cattle Pro, CowCalf5, Angus Info Management, or Website Development

Optional Additions:

Laptop Computer, QuickBooks, IPad/Tablet, CowCalf Mobile APP

*Details: 33% Cost share up to $3,300, max eligible estimated expenses – $10,000

Pasture, Crops, and Livestock Systems Program – opening in May or June (estimate)

{pasture watering systems, hay barns, grain bins, hay wrappers, cold storage, livestock handling equipment}

Details: 33% Cost share up to $3,300; max eligible estimated expenses – $10,000.

Produce GAP Grant Opportunity: – opening in early spring (estimate)

The grant cost share proposed is 50% for:

-USDA Audit up to $1,000 producer cost (cost share up to $500)

Potable and irrigation water testing up to $200 producer cost (cost share up to $100)

Dear SVMGA members,

The third week of January is here! It’s hard to fathom how quickly 2018 became history, and how rapidly 2019 is marching along.

So, the SVMGA first meeting of the year is Thursday evening at 7 pm at the Halifax County Agricultural Center. Wow! Came up in a hurry.

This meeting it’s time to “re-.”

Renew memberships, after March, the renewal rate of $10.00 jumps to $20.00. (Dues can be mailed to Ed McKinney, 9000 Philpott Road
South Boston Virginia 24592, checks made out to SVMGA.)

Review last year: What we did, what we spent, etc.

Revisit supporting the Jr. Livestock shows. Do we want to maintain the same amount of support, increase or decrease?

Re-elect officers? Are there any volunteers out there who want to be President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer?

Remit your surveys to Andrea McKinney. In order to better serve the membership, Andrea sent an emailed survey to you guys. If you did not get her email, please drop her a line at: [email protected].
